NHS 24 was founded as a Special Health Board on 6 April 2001. Regional contact centresfollowed, with Aberdeen the first to launch in May 2002, followed by Clydebank later that year and South Queensferry in 2003.
In 2005, we began the rollout of local and remote contact centres, which now operate from nine sites:
Since opening in 2002 we've taken more than 20 million calls from the Scottish public. We currently take around 1.5 million calls per year, with peak demand at weekends when we answer 14,500 calls.
From the start, we have delivered telephone and online services providing people across Scotland with access to healthcare information and advice.
We work in close partnership with all health boards and the Scottish Ambulance Service to provide essential services to patients in need of urgent advice and care during the out of hours period.
Anyone across Scotland can phone NHS 24 using the freephone number 111. This gives people access to the help and advice they need when they can't wait until their GP practice or dentist reopens.
We provide access to trusted health and care information and support through a range of services.
These services are available to the public through a range of channels, including the web, webchat and telephone.
