Pharmacy advisor

Pharmacists at NHS 24 work in our main contact centres based in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Our pharmacy advisors are an essential part of the team who provide the 111 phone service to Scotland.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you'll need to be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council and have extensive experience providing advice to both the public and other medical professionals.

Skills

As all communication with patients is via telephone, you'll need exceptional communication skills including listening and questioning to aid your clinical decision making. In addition, this role is responsible for providing robust and accurate advice to other clinical staff when required, including an element of training colleagues for professional development purposes.

Working patterns

Pharmacy advisors at our contact centres work 7 – 16 hours per week. Most shifts are night-shifts, which are flexible and can work in conjunction with a part-time primary care position.

Life as a pharmacy advisor at NHS 24

“I’ve worked as a locum pharmacist for a number of years, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of stability. I applied to work part-time with NHS 24 as I wanted a stable job alongside my locum work, which can take me all over Scotland. The benefits of working at NHS 24 are that it’s more organised, provides scope for progression and you get regular, structured days with breaks – something that can be a rarity for a pharmacist. I also enjoy working in the wider medical team here, being a pharmacist can be a very lonely occupation, but here I get involved with training nurses and other clinical staff, it’s a very supportive environment overall.”
